NOW PLAYING: How is Mohs Performed?

FEMALE VOICE: The setup for Mohs surgery is actually very similar to what you might see in a sterile OR except that we do it right here in our office under local anesthesia. The patient's brought back to the room, we drape them in a sterile fashion, we get them anesthetized, and then we take that very first section around the skin cancer. That little tiny section of skin is brought over to my technician in my lab, which is right here in my office, processed into a microscopic slide, and I read it under the microscope. If I see that there is more cancer left in the slide, then I'll go back and take just a little bit more until I've cleared all of the skin cancer from the patient. Once the patient's totally clear of skin cancer, they're sent home, come back the next day and repair the defect that was left by the skin cancer.
