DR. KRISTEN RICHARDS: I am the founder and president of Torrey Pines Dermatology. I have lived in La Jolla my whole life, although I did leave for a number of years to pursue my medical training all over the United States. In addition, I have a real interest in international relations and did major in the same thing at Stanford. And I've had the opportunity to live all over the world in countries like Guatemala, Zimbabwe, France, Norway, and Japan. And through those experiences, I feel like have gained a really great perspective on people of all different cultures and backgrounds and I feel that it's helped me to be a more compassionate physician. I majored in international relations at Stanford, but then I changed my course a little bit and went on the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and got my medical degree. I then went to Northwestern and I did a dermatology residency, during which time I discovered I loved surgery. And I followed that up with a year at Vanderbilt, where I did - - surgery and reconstruction of the face. And now that I'm back in La Jolla, fortunate enough to be able to focus solely on the areas that I truly love, cosmetic and surgical dermatology. I love surgery because my patients will come in to me with a major skin cancer in a very cosmetically important area. And by the end of the day, I am able to remove it and by the next day I'm able to repair it in artistic fashion so that their skin looks almost completely normal again.
