Laser Hair Removal - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Laser hair removal is the use of a laser system that emits a gentle beam of light, passing through the skin and into the hair follicle. The follicle absorbs the light and it is transformed into heat, destroying the follicle. A protective cooling device is attached to the laser machine to protect the skin and make the patient more comfortable. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about laser hair removal.

How long does the procedure take?

The length of the procedure largely depends on the area or areas being treated. It can range from two minutes or less to three hours. The legs typically take the longest lasting about an hour and a half to three hours. The back one men comes next, lasting an hour to an hour and a half. Shoulders for men can last anywhere from a half hour to an hour. Other areas require far less time such as the bikini area, which only takes about 5 to 10 minutes, while the underarms and chin take three minutes or less. The upper lip is the quickest, lasting only a mere 10 seconds.

How many treatments are required?

Everyone typically needs at least three to six laser treatments, but others may need up to eight treatments to get the desired result. Factors such as hair color, skin tone, thickness, and coarseness of the hair and the amount of hair being removed, influence the number of treatments required.

Is laser hair removal safe?

Hair removal is completely safe. Side effects may include pink or red skin in the treated area that usually fades within a few minutes to a few hours. Cold packs or ice can diminish the time.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

Most people describe laser hair removal as feeling like a rubber band has been snapped against their skin, while others describe it as a pinching feeling. A topical anesthetic is usually applied to reduce pain.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

It can cost anywhere from $100 to $200 per visit, depending on where you live, who you go to and the areas you are having done. There are typically packages available from dermatology centers. Do some research in your area to find the best deals for you. The results can vary by person.
