BOTOX® Injections - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

BOTOX® cosmetic is a purified protein created by clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is used to temporarily improve frown lines in the forehead and between the brows. There are many questions that patients have regarding the procedure, and below we have taken time to answer a number of these frequently asked questions.

How does BOTOX® cosmetic work?

Small doses of BOTOX® cosmetic are injected through a tiny needle injected into underlying muscles between the brows and in the forehead. It reduces muscle activity that causes frowning by blocking the nerve impulses that trigger the muscle contractions. The forehead remains smooth and taut.

How long does it last?

Results can last for up to four months but may vary person to person. It takes about 48 hours to see the result after treatment which takes about 10 to 15 minutes to perform.

Are there side effects?

Minor bruising is the most common side effect post BOTOX® injections. The bruising can last up to a few days. Other side effects of BOTOX® injections include discomfort or pain at the injection site, dry mouth, fatigue, headaches and neck pain, and eye or vision problems. Some patients can have a more severe allergic reaction that can itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness or feeling faint.

Will my face be expressionless?

If the procedure is done correctly you should still be able to make expressions. The procedure is dependent on the skill of the dermatologist so be sure to check credentials before letting anyone inject you with BOTOX®.

Will my frown lines return if i do not continue BOTOX® injections?

Frown lines will return about four to six months after your BOTOX® injections. If you choose not to continue getting injections your frown lines will return to the way they were before you got your first injections. BOTOX® cosmetic can be preventative of worsening of existing frown lines by stopping the lines from getting deeper as you continue to prevent the muscles from contracting in that spot.

Is BOTOX® cosmetic safe for everyone?

BOTOX® injections are relatively safe for the majority of the population, but for those with any disease that affects the muscles or nerves should abstain.

Is BOTOX® cosmetic better than fillers for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles?

BOTOX® injections prevent the muscles under the skin from contracting to cause wrinkling in the skin. Wrinkles that exist beyond a facial expression may respond better to fillers for those who want a smoother look when the face is relaxed.

Is BOTOX® cosmetic expensive?

BOTOX® injections can be purchased either by the vial or by the area being treated. It varies from clinic to clinic, so be sure to check before going. Depending on what you are having done you may be able to save money by doing it by the vile.
